Finally! How to install LATEST Keycloak (26.0.5) on Docker using Traefik as a reverse proxy and postgres as a database.
This tutorial covers installing Keycloak on Docker, using Traefik as a reverse proxy and postgresql as a database. It is designed to work with the LATEST version of Keycloak which as of writing is Keycloak 26.0.5
After configuring the directory setup we will navigate into the postgresconf directory we created.
cd postgresconf
Then we will edit the pg_hba.conf file. Just open it with nano or your favorite editor and enter: (To open the file in nano run: nano pg_hba.conf)
# PostgreSQL Client Authentication Configuration File
# ===================================================
#
# Refer to the "Client Authentication" section in the PostgreSQL
# documentation for a complete description of this file. A short
# synopsis follows.
#
# This file controls: which hosts are allowed to connect, how clients
# are authenticated, which PostgreSQL user names they can use, which
# databases they can access. Records take one of these forms:
#
# local DATABASE USER METHOD [OPTIONS]
# host DATABASE USER ADDRESS METHOD [OPTIONS]
# hostssl DATABASE USER ADDRESS METHOD [OPTIONS]
# hostnossl DATABASE USER ADDRESS METHOD [OPTIONS]
# hostgssenc DATABASE USER ADDRESS METHOD [OPTIONS]
# hostnogssenc DATABASE USER ADDRESS METHOD [OPTIONS]
#
# (The uppercase items must be replaced by actual values.)
#
# The first field is the connection type: "local" is a Unix-domain
# socket, "host" is either a plain or SSL-encrypted TCP/IP socket,
# "hostssl" is an SSL-encrypted TCP/IP socket, and "hostnossl" is a
# non-SSL TCP/IP socket. Similarly, "hostgssenc" uses a
# GSSAPI-encrypted TCP/IP socket, while "hostnogssenc" uses a
# non-GSSAPI socket.
#
# DATABASE can be "all", "sameuser", "samerole", "replication", a
# database name, or a comma-separated list thereof. The "all"
# keyword does not match "replication". Access to replication
# must be enabled in a separate record (see example below).
#
# USER can be "all", a user name, a group name prefixed with "+", or a
# comma-separated list thereof. In both the DATABASE and USER fields
# you can also write a file name prefixed with "@" to include names
# from a separate file.
#
# ADDRESS specifies the set of hosts the record matches. It can be a
# host name, or it is made up of an IP address and a CIDR mask that is
# an integer (between 0 and 32 (IPv4) or 128 (IPv6) inclusive) that
# specifies the number of significant bits in the mask. A host name
# that starts with a dot (.) matches a suffix of the actual host name.
# Alternatively, you can write an IP address and netmask in separate
# columns to specify the set of hosts. Instead of a CIDR-address, you
# can write "samehost" to match any of the server's own IP addresses,
# or "samenet" to match any address in any subnet that the server is
# directly connected to.
#
# METHOD can be "trust", "reject", "md5", "password", "scram-sha-256",
# "gss", "sspi", "ident", "peer", "pam", "ldap", "radius" or "cert".
# Note that "password" sends passwords in clear text; "md5" or
# "scram-sha-256" are preferred since they send encrypted passwords.
#
# OPTIONS are a set of options for the authentication in the format
# NAME=VALUE. The available options depend on the different
# authentication methods -- refer to the "Client Authentication"
# section in the documentation for a list of which options are
# available for which authentication methods.
#
# Database and user names containing spaces, commas, quotes and other
# special characters must be quoted. Quoting one of the keywords
# "all", "sameuser", "samerole" or "replication" makes the name lose
# its special character, and just match a database or username with
# that name.
#
# This file is read on server startup and when the server receives a
# SIGHUP signal. If you edit the file on a running system, you have to
# SIGHUP the server for the changes to take effect, run "pg_ctl reload",
# or execute "SELECT pg_reload_conf()".
#
# Put your actual configuration here
# ----------------------------------
#
# If you want to allow non-local connections, you need to add more
# "host" records. In that case you will also need to make PostgreSQL
# listen on a non-local interface via the listen_addresses
# configuration parameter, or via the -i or -h command line switches.
# CAUTION: Configuring the system for local "trust" authentication
# allows any local user to connect as any PostgreSQL user, including
# the database superuser. If you do not trust all your local users,
# use another authentication method.
# TYPE DATABASE USER ADDRESS METHOD
# "local" is for Unix domain socket connections only
local all all trust
# IPv4 local connections:
host all all 127.0.0.1/32 trust
# IPv6 local connections:
host all all ::1/128 trust
# Allow replication connections from localhost, by a user with the
# replication privilege.
local replication all trust
host replication all 127.0.0.1/32 trust
host replication all ::1/128 trust
host all all 0.0.0.0/0 md5
To save it in nano just hit Ctl + O and Enter and Ctl + X to exit.
Then we will edit the postgres.conf file. Just open it in nano and enter:

#
# This file consists of lines of the form:
#
# name = value
#
# (The "=" is optional.) Whitespace may be used. Comments are introduced with
# "#" anywhere on a line. The complete list of parameter names and allowed
# values can be found in the PostgreSQL documentation.
#
# The commented-out settings shown in this file represent the default values.
# Re-commenting a setting is NOT sufficient to revert it to the default value;
# you need to reload the server.
#
# This file is read on server startup and when the server receives a SIGHUP
# signal. If you edit the file on a running system, you have to SIGHUP the
# server for the changes to take effect, run "pg_ctl reload", or execute
# "SELECT pg_reload_conf()". Some parameters, which are marked below,
# require a server shutdown and restart to take effect.
#
# Any parameter can also be given as a command-line option to the server, e.g.,
# "postgres -c log_connections=on". Some parameters can be changed at run time
# with the "SET" SQL command.

Database Security Notes:
Be sure your server firewall is set to DENY ALL external traffic to the ports your database is listening on, as this database configuration ALLOWS password based connections from all IPs. This is because I was having issues with connecting to the database container from within the keycloak container. I will release an update as soon as I figure one out. Please note that docker does not respect ufw firewall rules see: https://askubuntu.com/questions/652556/uncomplicated-firewall-ufw-is-not-blocking-anything-when-using-docker. Be sure to set your firewall rules on the server level.
P.S. Also be sure your database password is STRONG.

Next we will navigate back to our main KeycloakTraefik directory and edit our compose.yaml file.
cd .. && nano compose.yaml
Just enter:

Be sure to adjust the email to your real email, and the domain name of the site is referenced numerous times throughout the file (3x) so be sure to replace it (it is set to auth.example.tech) with your real domain.
.Env Config
Then open the .env file and enter:
NOTE: The .env file we created contains the admin credentials to our Keycloak Master Realm and the credentials to our database. Be sure all passwords are STRONG!
Now that we have created all of the prerequisite files etc. we can start our Keycloak Docker instance. Be sure your domain (or subdomain) you are using for your keycloak instance is pointing to your server and that ports 80 and 443 are open on the server.
To start our keycloak instance (the below command starts all of the containers -traefik, keycloak, and postgres), in the Docker/KeycloakTraefik directory run:
docker compose up -d
Give it about 40 seconds (depending on your server specs) and access your domain that we set in the docker compose.yaml file.
You should see the KeyCloak Master screen:
Please note that if you access the url before the ssl certificate has propagated properly you will get an annoying “Something Went Wrong” area. Open a private browser window and and try accessing the url from there, if it works in a private window, then clear your browser’s cache and access the url again, it should work this time! Also depending on the setup, if you continue to receive the “Something Went Wrong” error try playing around with the KC_PROXY_HEADERS variable in the compose.yaml file. You can find all config variables here: Keycloak All Config
Final Notes
If you run into issues with this installation, or if I left something out, or if you see an area that could be improved please let me know! I am going to release more thorough documentation on the compose file in the near future as well a tutorial on troubleshooting docker containers. Phoenix Ignited offers premium Keycloak installation services, so feel more than free to send us a ping if you want us to install and configure your Keycloak instance!
