Taping Cams for Security?

June 2024

Perhaps you have heard of taping internet connected cams for security / privacy. Mark Zuckerberg originally popularized placing tape over web-cams and it has since gained traction, but regardless of whether you use tape or anything else, covering internet connected cams is highly recommended.

Why Should I Tape My Web-Cam?

It comes down to privacy, cams connected to the internet, if hacked could be used to spy on victims. Often I don’t think we take this threat seriously enough, just google hacked cams and you will see results that sicken you. Case after case of web-cams being hacked can be found, and especially if you are running Windows, it is essential, absolutely essential to tape web cams. It is easier than you think to gain remote access to a web-cam on a Windows machine, just look it up, find a tutorial and you will be stunned.

Duct Tape?

Regarding the type of tape used it shouldn’t be clear (probably not scotch or packing tape) and of course you don’t want it to leave gunk on the cam. I’ve found that using masking tape works perfectly, you stick it on and it easily pulls off whenever you need to access the cam.

All Cams?

Any cam connected to the internet, this means any device that has access to wifi etc. Basically if the cam can be accessed remotely, it is just about guaranteed it has access to the internet and you should tape it. Some of the creepiest cam hacks are of baby monitors getting hacked and hackers watching sleeping children.

Extremely creepy I know, but as reality doesn’t care what we think, we need to account for reality. So many people don’t realize the dangers their cams pose, the privacy invasion the web-cam industry has welcomed in, and just how important privacy is. I hope you found this article informative and I hope to publish another in the near future, revealing more of the privacy havoc that connected / remote cams are.
