Setting up a Staging Site in WordPress with WP Staging

In this tutorial I go through setting up a staging site within your WordPress install via WP Staging. With that let’s kick off.

Installing WP Staging

First off we need to install the WP Staging plugin, you can find it in the WordPress.org plugin repository either directly from within your admin backend or you can download it here and manually upload it to your site.

Setting up a Staging Site

Now we will setup our staging site. Go to the WP Staging dashboard and click “Create Staging Site”.

You can name the site what you like and then configure any other details including which files and directories to include / exclude, which db tables to include / exclude etc.

Then select “Start Cloning”. This can take a few to several minutes so feel free to grab a coffee in the meantime!

Once the staging site is created you can open, update, reset, or delete the staging site via the actions dropdown button. To push changes from the staging site to the production site however requires WP Staging PRO.

Note: If you are having problems logging into the staging site check to see if you have 2FA enabled on the staging site, if you had WordFence 2FA or WP2FA enabled on the production site, you will also have 2FA enabled on the staging site. You can try logging in the default WordPress way, however this may not work. In that case you will have to deactivate the 2FA plugin via your host’s file manager. Simply navigate to site_name>wp-content>plugins>plugin_name and rename the plugin_name directory, for instance plugin_name_1.

Once you are logged into the staging site you can start testing to your heart’s content!

That’s a wrap!
